Gates Cambridge Trust


With a munificent benefaction from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the Gates Cambridge Trust has established, with effect from October 2001, a scheme of Gates Cambridge Scholarships for scholars of outstanding academic merit and leadership potential from every country of the world (excluding the United Kingdom), who are committed to serving their communities, and who gain admission to the University of Cambridge. Since 2001, the Gates Cambridge Trust has supported 620 Scholars from 78 countries.


The Gates Cambridge Trust intends to offer a substantial number of awards annually, which will cover the costs of studying at Cambridge for the following courses of study:


Research leading to the degree of PhD
One-year postgraduate courses of study
Second bachelor degree as an affiliated student (see the Undergraduate Prospectus)
Clinical Studies MBBChir degree (see the Medical School webpage)
Some of these awards will be for students from the United States of America; but students from all countries, including countries of the European Union (but excluding the United Kingdom), will be eligible to be considered for a Gates Cambridge Scholarship. As well as being of outstanding academic merit, candidates for these awards must show evidence of leadership potential and a commitment to serving their communities.


The Gates Cambridge Scholarships will cover:


University Composition Fee and College fees at the appropriate 1 rate
a maintenance allowance for a single student (£11,500 for 12 months for 2007–08)
one economy one-way airfare from the scholar's normal country of residence to the UK at the beginning of the course of study or research; and one economy one-way airfare from the UK to the scholar's normal country of residence at the end of the course of study or research.


* The University Composition Fee varies for different types of students and applicants should see 'The costs you will incur' for full details about precise amounts. Where an applicant from overseas has been successfully nominated for an ORS award, the University Composition Fee will be paid at the home rate. Where a student from the European Union has been successful in gaining a fees award from public authorities, the Trust will not pay these fees.

The Sir Ratan Tata Trust awards scholarships to students studying in India covering tuition fee, at the undergraduate or postgraduate level. Hostel and other fee are not covered under the scholarship.
For the financial year 2007-08, scholarship forms from the Trust Office will be issued to the following course of study only:

Students will NOT be issued forms if: (a) waived from paying tuition fee; (b) received full scholarship from trusts / organisations; and (c) receiving stipend.
All students who have passed their 12th (HSC) and have secured admission to the 1st year pharmacy, nursing, architectural or LLB (five year) courses are NOT eligible for the scholarship.
No forms will be issued to students studying diploma, part-time, correspondence or certificate courses.
Only one student per family may benefit from the scholarship, each year.

1. For Undergraduate/Postgraduate students studying law, catering and hotel management, education and fine arts, the cut off percentage is 65.2. For MCA/MCM the cut off percentage is 70.3. The cut off percentage for postgraduate students studying pharmacy is 704. For postgraduate nursing, and architecture students, the cut off percentage is 60.

Students who meet all the above criteria and wish to collect the application form may come to Mulla House, 3rd Floor, 51, M. G. Road, Fort, Mumbai – 400 001 along with a photocopy of:
Current year’s tuition fee receipt (April 2007 - March 2008) and / or for second year direct admission students, centralised admission letter.

Mark sheet of the last examination appeared for.

Outstation students meeting the Trust criteria may send the above mentioned documents by POST to the Trust Office latest by September 25, 2007, at the following address:

GATE 2008

Admission to post graduate programmes with MHRD and some other government scholarship/assistantship at engineering colleges/institutes in the country are open to those who qualify through GATE.

The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is an all-India examination administered and conducted in eight zones across the country by the GATE Committee comprising faculty from Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore and seven Indian Institutes of Technology on behalf of the National Coordinating Board - GATE, Department of Education, Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD), Government of India.

The zones and the corresponding administrative institutes are
Zone 1 - Indian Institute of Science Bangalore Zone 2 - Indian Institute of Technology Bombay Zone 3 - Indian Institute of Technology Delhi Zone 4 - Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati Zone 5 - Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur Zone 6 - Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur Zone 7 - Indian Institute of Technology Madras Zone 8 - Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee

The overall coordination and responsibility lies with Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore designated as the Organizing Institute for GATE 2008.

Admission to post graduate programmes with MHRD and some other government scholarship/assistantship at engineering colleges/institutes in the country are open to those who qualify through GATE.


GATE qualified candidates with Bachelor degree in Engineering/ Technology/ Architecture/ Pharmacy or Master degree in any branch of Science/Mathematics/Statistics/Computer Applications are eligible for Master/Doctoral programmes in Engineering/ Technology/Architecture/Pharmacy as well as for Doctoral programmes in relevant branches of Science. To avail the scholarship, the candidate must additionally secure admission to such a postgraduate programme, as per the prevailing procedure of the admitting institution. GATE qualification, however, is not required for candidates with Master degree in Engineering/ Technology/ Architecture/ Pharmacy who may be seeking scholarship/assistantship for relevant doctoral programmes.
Some institutions specify GATE as the mandatory qualification even for admission of self-financing students to postgraduate programmes.

GATE qualified candidates in Engineering disciplines are also eligible for the award of Junior Research Fellowship in CSIR Laboratories. Some government organizations prescribe GATE qualification as a requirement for applying to the post of a Scientist/Engineer.

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR),

invites applications from Indian Biomedical Scientists for the International Fellowships for the year 2007-08

Number of Fellowships: Young Scientists – 6; Senior Scientists – 3*
Duration: 3-6 months for young scientists and 10-15 days for senior scientists

Eligibility:
M.D/PhD degree with at least three years teaching/research experience for young scientists and at least fifteen years teaching/research experience for senior scientists.
Regular position in a Recognized Biomedical / Research/Health Institution in India.
Below 45 years of age for young and 55 years for senior scientists.
Financial support:US $ 1800 per months, contingency grants of Rs. 10,000/- and return economy class air ticket (excursion airfare) for young scientists. US $ 150 per day including accommodation subject to a maximum of US $ 1800 for entire duration and return economy class air ticket (excursion airfare) for senior scientists.

Notes:

The applicant should submit a letter of acceptance from the foreign Institute where he/she proposes to work along with a concrete plan of training/ research work to be undertaken during the fellowship.
Recommendation by the Head of the parent organisation/institute is essential.
Incomplete applications will not be entertained.
Decision of ICMR will be final.

To Be read carefully Before applying for scholarship/ad-hoc grant

1. A limited number of scholarships and ad-hoc grants are available only for well-merited students of lower
income group, who cannot continue their education without such financial support. Therefore, the
student must attach the photocopy of admission receipt with the application.
2. Scholarship is offered to students pursuing technical/professional Degree courses like BE., B.Tech,
MCA, MBA, MBBS, BUMS, BAMS, BDS, B. Pharma, B.Ed, BCA, BIT, BSS etc. The students in the
final year of their courses are not eligible for the scholarship. Apart from the income criterion, the
student must have secured at least 55% aggregate marks in the previous examination. The
scholarship once sanctioned will continue for the entire balanced duration of the particular academic
course, subject to satisfactory progress and submission of the prescribed documents like Annual
Progress Report, Mark Sheet of the previous exam, Declaration of Income of Parent/Guardian etc.
within the stipulated time frame.
3. Similarly, the ad-hoc grant is offered for the students of the General Degree Courses like B.A., B.Sc,
B.Com, and Pre-Tib etc. For this, the students must have obtained at least 50% in the previous
examination. Ad-hoc grant is one time grant.
4. Income of the parent/guardian is one of the basic criteria for the award of scholarship/ad-hoc grant.
Therefore:
(i) In case of salaried class, the student must have indicated the designation, pay scale, basic pay
and other allowances along with total emoluments of his parent/guardian. A mere statement
saying, “Service” will not be acceptable. The student must attach a Salary Certificate or Pension
Certificate (in case of retired persons) of his/her parent/guardian along with the application.
(ii) In case of agriculture/horticulture etc. the student has to indicate the total land holding with
details of irrigated and non-irrigated land and other landed property owned by his/her family along
with the total income of the family. These details must be stated in the affidavit of the parent/
guardian. In case of certificate from Revenue authority, these details must be indicated in the
certificate.
(iii) In case of business class, the students must categorically state the name of the business/type
of the business along with the total turn over and the total income of the family. The same details
must be stated in the affidavit from his/her parent/guardian.
(iv) Income from all other sources must also be mentioned specially, if mother is also employed/in
business
5. It must be noted that all income certificate and statements made by the students in the application is
subject to further verification by the Central Wakf Council. In case of any deliberate discrepancy/
concealment of facts, the Central Wakf Council may initiate necessary action as per law.
6. The income certificate/affidavit must be from the parent’s guardian’s side and should have been issued
from the respective home station. The income certificate issued or affidavit made from the place where
the student is studying, as against the home station, will NOT be acceptable (in case of photo copy, it
should be attested)
7. The Form should be complete in all respects. All appendices enclosed with the application form should
be filled in and forwarded along with the application itself. Incomplete applications will be rejected and
no correspondence will be entertained.
8. The last date of receipt of the application form in the office of the Central Wakf Council is September 30
of every year, which must be adhered to.

Performance assessment criteria for the renewal of the scholarshipThe Aditya Birla Scholars are assessed regularly on qualitative and quantitative parameters to judge their performance on the academic and leadership front. This assessment forms the basis for determining the continuation of the scholarship for the next academic session.For the IIMs, the assessment is done once in a one-year time frame.For the IITs and for BITS (Pilani), the assessment is done thrice in a three-year time frame.Assessment criteria:
Scholastic standards: The scholar must be in the top 25 per cent of students in his/her batch
Work done by the scholar during the course of the programme: At least 60 per cent of the assignments must have a rating of at least 7 on a 9-point scale
Practical work-related experiences of the scholar: Summer project must have a rating of at least 7 on a 9-point scale
Participation in campus activities: Active participation in a minimum of two forums on campus
Learning: Scholar has to write a 350-word essay on "Being an Aditya Birla scholar: experience sharing"
NB: The documents for the performance measurement have to be submitted by the scholar and certified by the academic dean at the institute. The assessment will be based on overall performance in all areas. No single factor will be a major determinant.

India's largest commercial enterprise and the No.1 Indian Company in Fortune 'Global 500' listing - has announced 450 Scholarships for meritorious students all over India, under the IndianOil Scholarships Scheme for the academic year 2007-08. As part of IndianOil's social responsibility programme, the scheme provides for attractive scholarships to bright students selected on 'merit-cum-means' basis. For the academic year 2007-08, 450 scholarships covering the first year students of 10+ / ITI, Engineering, MBBS and MBA, will be formally announced through newspaper advertisements inviting applications under the Scholarships Scheme.
Out of the total 450 scholarships, 250 scholarships for 10+/ ITI students will be on zonal basis @ Rs. 1000/- per month for two years. Engineering (100) and MBBS (40) students will be awarded scholarships @ Rs. 2000/- per month for four years, while MBA (60) students shall be entitled to a scholarship amount of Rs.2000/- per month for a duration of two years.As part of the scheme, special encouragement is being given to girl students, physically challenged students, and students from J&K as well as the Northeast States. The last date for submitting the application form is 30th September, 2007.

THE SCHEME OF NATIONAL OVERSEAS SCHOLARSHIPS FOR SCHEDULE TRIBES CANDIDATES.

THE SCHEME
1. The scheme provides financial assistance to students selected for pursuing
higher studies abroad in certain subjects at the Masters level, and for Ph. D and Post-
Doctoral research programmes. Bachelor level courses in any discipline are not covered
under the scheme. 15 awards per year would be sanctioned to ST students as under:

2 If for any specific year, successful candidates are not available to the extent

Based on the Government Order issued in G.O. Ms No.103/AD & TW Dept. dated 30.08.2007. TAHDCO has proposed to extent support to 100 SC/ST candidates who have passed IAS Preliminary Examination held during May 2007 and Preparing for IAS Main Examination for 2007-08 to be conducted by UPSC. A sum of Rs.25, 000/- (Rupees Twenty Five Thousand only) per candidate will be given as grant for purchase of books and for meeting incidental expenses.

Applications are invited from the eligible candidates on or before 19-09-2007 with the following details: (1) Name and Registration No. for Preliminary IAS Examination (2) Copy of Community Certificate (3) Proof for having passed IAS Preliminary Examination held in May 2007. (4) Evidence for appearing IAS Main Examination with optional subjects I and II (5) Two passport size photos.
